CBS’s Cancellation of ‘Blue Bloods’ Doesn’t Add Up

Earlier this month, fans received the disappointing news they had been dreading. “We really want to thank the cast and crew, everyone involved in the show,” Amy Reisenbach told via Deadline. “We absolutely will miss the family dinners. It is important to give show the sendoff it deserves.”

However, when reminded that the cast has made personal pleas to the CBS brass to reconsider the cancellation, Reisenbach quoted saying, “We love this cast, we love their passion for the show. All shows have to come to an end. It’s important to us to refresh the schedule. We are going to end the show come December.” That was it, no further justification for the show ending.

The cancellation of ‘Blue Bloods’ leaves many perplexed. The show, costing around an assumed $7 million per episode (on the higher end of scripted shows) to produce—less than half of what ‘Yellowstone’ costs at approximately $15 million (sometimes up to 20 million an episode at times) —consistently garners 7 million viewers per episode (on average), more than ‘Yellowstone’s’ 5 million. ‘Blue Bloods’ not only brings in a broader audience but also a consistent advertising revenue stream from its primetime slot over the last decade.

The Unanswered Question:
Why would CBS cancel a less expensive show that outperforms others in both viewership and revenue? ‘Yellowstone,’ despite its success, represents a shift towards streaming, which alters the revenue dynamics. However, the decision to cancel a proven and economically efficient show like ‘Blue Bloods’ seems counterintuitive.

While ‘Yellowstone’ remains popular, the choice to discontinue ‘Blue Bloods’ appears to be a risky move for its stakeholders and sponsors. Will CBS ever provide a clear and rational explanation for this decision? What is CBS’s strategy beyond canceling its consistent performer of the last decade?”

  1. CBS IS MAKING A BIG MISTAKE BY CANCELLING BLUE BLOODS ITS AN AMAZING SHOW WITH VERY GOOD LESSONS ESPECIALLY AT THE DINNER TABLE AND ALOT OF PEOPLE WATCH THE SHOW. THERE IS STILL SO MUCH MORE TO DO WITH THE SHOW AND THE CAST ISNT READY FOR THE SHOW TO END AND THE FANS ARENT READY FOR THE SHOW TO END. I MEAN BLUE BLOODS LITERALLY COSTS LESS MONEY PER EPISODE THAN YELLOWSTONE AND HAS MORE VIEWERS THAN YELLOWSTONE SO WHY NOT CANCEL YELLOWSTONE AND KEEP BLUE BLOODS, AND IF CBS STILL DOESNT WANT TO CONTINUE THE SHOW HAVE ANOTHER NETWORK PICK IT UP LIKE ABC DID FOR 9-11 WHEN FOX CANCELLED IT.
