The final episodes of Blue Bloods are currently airing on CBS on Friday nights. Blue Bloods has been one of the most popular shows on television ever since it premiered back in 2010.

That’s why it will likely come as a shock to many fans to learn that the Blue Bloods star Tom Selleck, who has done his darndest to keep the show alive, once threatened to quit the police drama early on.

Selleck Nearly Quit Blue Bloods

Selleck revealed this last week in the special Blue Bloods: Celebrating a Family Legacy. He explained that he was left disappointed by the show’s trajectory in season one.

Of course, “disappointed” seems like an understatement if he threatened to bail on the show!

“Suddenly, there was a difference in the tone, and some new people had been brought in and the show was more procedural,” Selleck said. “I kind of met with the other actors and said, ‘Look, you can stay out of this. I’m going to have to have broad enough shoulders for this. But if you agree with me that you like the pilot and not the way the show was beginning then I’m going to see what I can do.’”

“I called some people at the network,” he continued. “I called my agent and said, ‘This isn’t going to work.’ We were on episode 2 and I said, ‘Look, I don’t think I belong on this show if that’s what they’re going to do.’ But that was done in not in a threatening way but in a business-like way and it worked out pretty good.”

Selleck’s Co-Stars Rally Around Him

Thankfully, Selleck’s colleagues agreed with him about wanting to get the show back on track.

“He rallied us and included us, which was great because it showed that he cared that we were all in this together. It just brought us together and tighter as a family,” said the Blue Bloods star Bridget Moynahan, who portrays Erin Reagan on the program.

“What we all gravitated towards was the connection between the family and that connection had to be protected … he used his experience and his influence to ensure that we could protect that integrity of the show that we all signed up for,” added her co-star Donnie Wahlberg, who plays Danny Reagan.

Selleck portrays the fictional New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan. He has been open about his disappointment over CBS cancelling Blue Bloods. Indeed, the show has been performing well on Friday nights for fourteen years.

“A lot of people thought, ‘God, they put them on at 10:00 Friday night, that’s a death spot,’ and it turned out that if we built it, they came, and that was a big surprise for everybody and that was a very big surprise when people not only came and watched it but it dominated,” he said. “It dominated Friday nights for 14 years.”

Selleck Is ‘Kind Of Frustrated’

Selleck spent most of this year trying to save Blue Bloods from cancellation.

“I’m kind of frustrated,” he told TV Insider in October. “During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful. In a Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024 (in total viewers, we were No. 9 out of 100), if you discount the three football shows, we’re No. 6!”

“My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out. I remember after the weekend [of the final episode’s shoot], I said, ‘I’ve got to get to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday,’” Selleck continued. “Well, there was no Monday. It’s just going to take a while.”

There are just two more episodes of Blue Bloods that have yet to air. Be sure to tune in tomorrow and next week so that this show can go out on top!
