The final eight episodes of the beloved CBS series Blue Bloods are set to begin airing on Friday night. The show has been on since 2010, and the cast has gotten incredibly close during that time.
In a new interview, Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg, 55, revealed that main star Tom Selleck, 79, made a point of watching him film his final scene for the series. Selleck could not help but become emotional as he watched the scene unfold.
Selleck Cried Watching Wahlberg’s Last Scene
To make the matter more poignant, it’s unusual for Selleck to be around Wahlberg while filming.
“Tom Selleck never really shows up in Donnie’s scenes,” Wahlberg began. “It’s Danny world and Frank Reagan world.”
Wahlberg portrays Detective Danny Reagan, while Selleck plays his father, the NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan. Blue Bloods fans know that the two characters typically only cross paths at home or at Sunday dinners.
The last scene that Wahlberg filmed for the show was with Marisa Ramirez, who plays Danny’s partner, Maria Baez. He was stunned when Selleck showed up on set to watch.
“He was there watching. I looked across the room and saw him standing there,” Wahlberg recalled. “Tom he’s a really serious and focused man. He likes to cover up his emotions. He doesn’t like to show vulnerability.”
“I looked across and he had tears in his eyes,” Wahlberg continued. “That memory for me still brings up a lot for me.”

‘Tremendous Humility’
Wahlberg had been watching Selleck since he was “a little kid,” so seeing him cry over his scene was a big deal.
“To suddenly now [be] working with this man and he’s there to support me on my last day of work. It filled me with tremendous humility,” Wahlberg gushed. “It’s more gratitude, it’s not saditude.”
Saditude! Great word.
Now that the final episodes of Blue Bloods are about to air, Wahlberg is getting reflective about his time on the show.
“I don’t want to say [I’m] sad, because there are a lot of things to be really sad about in life. This was an amazing opportunity and a wonderful experience,” he concluded. “I made so many amazing life-long relationships and had a wonderful 14 years with our cast and crew in this city. So I don’t want to say sad. It’s emotional.”

Selleck ‘Frustrated’ That Blue Bloods Is Ending
As for Selleck, he’s made it clear that he’s not ready for Blue Bloods to end. As soon as the cancellation was announced at the end of last year, Selleck spent months trying to save the show.
“I’m kind of frustrated,” Selleck told TV Insider earlier this month. “During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful.”
When asked what he will miss most about Blue Bloods, Selleck didn’t hesitate to reply, “the actors.”
“The family of actors is as close as the Reagan family and the characters that they play,” he explained. “There’s isn’t a single one of them who didn’t want to come back. Most shows don’t end that way — there’s petty jealousy and all sorts of things– and we seemed to overcome that. It’s something for everybody to hang their hats on and be proud of.”
No wonder Selleck just had to watch Wahlberg’s final scene!
