Tom Selleck has been one of the most beloved Hollywood stars for decades. He’s widely known, of course, for his signature mustache. Unfortunately for Selleck, however, this has resulted in him getting hit with one joke repeatedly when he appears on talk shows and he’s just plain sick of it at this point!

Selleck Is Tired Of One Mustache Joke

Selleck, 79, has joked in the past that he and his mustache are two separate stars. Indeed, Selleck’s mustache has achieved international fame in its own right during his starring roles in popular shows like Magnum, P.I. and Blue Bloods.

When recently asked about his mustache’s notoriety, Selleck replied, “Yeah, I know.”

“It just got to the point where I’d go on a talk show and they’d say, ‘Now Tom, we have a surprise – act shocked but at a certain point, everybody in the audience is going to put on a moustache!’” he recalled to The Telegraph. “And I’d have to say, ‘Look, I know you thought you had a good idea but I’ve done that five times…’”

To be fair, though, that is a hilarious joke!

Selleck Confused About Being ‘The Mustache Guy’

Selleck went on to say that he isn’t exactly sure how he became “The Mustache Guy.”

“Look, I was born without it,” he stated. “It’s not as important to me as it seems to be to people. And every month or so, it’s completely new. The hairs have grown out, they’ve been trimmed. So I don’t know, it’s something I live with. I don’t resent it, but there’s more to the work than a mustache…”

Selleck was then asked about claims that his mustache is similar to ones that were sported by certain infamous dictators of the twentieth century.

“Well, mine’s different from theirs, thank God,” he said with a laugh. “But what about Burt Reynolds? It was very fashionable in the ’60s. Burt is – was – a friend. I didn’t grow it cos of Burt, but I think he thought I did.”

Selleck’s Good Looks Were Detrimental At Times

Selleck has been known for decades as one of the most dashingly handsome men in Hollywood. Some have even gone so far as to say that he “hit the genetic lottery” with his good looks. However, Selleck now believes that this may have actually hurt his career in his younger days.

‘Everybody has a cross to bear as an actor, and everybody has a task to be taken seriously,” he explained. “In the age I was going into acting, Dustin Hoffman didn’t have as tough a time getting to be taken seriously. I’m sure he did for years, but my first acting coach said, ‘Look, you walk through the door, you’re 6ft 4in, you’re pretty good-looking, Tom, you have to deliver that.’”

“And that was a struggle – in that era it was probably harder to be taken seriously [looking like him] than in the 1950s,” he added. “Unless you delivered. I think a lot of the time I walked in the door and they didn’t take me seriously.”

Thankfully, Selleck was able to overcome this to become the successful Hollywood star that he is today. We hope that both Selleck and his mustache have many years of amazing film and television roles to come!
