The Hollywood star Tom Selleck was devastated when his beloved television show Blue Bloods was cancelled by CBS. He tried his best to save the show, but so far, no luck.

Since filming the final episode of the show last month, Selleck has been trying to enjoy his retirement. Unfortunately, however, it appears that this is not going well.

Selleck Throws Himself Into Manual Labor

Sources close to Selleck are alleging that since wrapping filming on Blue Bloods, the 79 year-old former Magnum P.I. star has thrown himself into doing manual labor at his ranch in California.

As anyone who grew up on a farm or ranch knows, that’s some serious work.

“Instead of enjoying his time off, he’s working himself into a sweat doing repairs on the house, tending to the land and pitching himself into all sorts of postures a guy his age and size shouldn’t do,” one insider told Closer Magazine.

“He should take it easy, but he won’t,” the source continued. “He’s lifting and climbing and doing most, if not all, the fix-it jobs himself.”

This has led to Selleck’s family and friends becoming worried about his wellbeing.

“He needs something to do, but many feel he’s taking too many chances because when you get to be his age, if you fall you break something,” the insider warned. “His family is concerned and even friends tell him he should get a hired hand, but Tom’s stubborn and won’t be talked down from the ladder.”

This kind of thing can tend to happen around retirement age, when people feel a little bit lost without the anchor of their careers.

Selleck’s Ranch

Selleck lives on a 63-acre ranch in Ventura County, California with his wife Jillie Mack, who he’s been married to since 1987. Back in May, Selleck implied that he was in danger of losing his ranch over the Blue Bloods cancellation.

“You know, hopefully I keep working enough to hold onto the place,” he said at the time. “If I stopped working, yeah. Am I set for life? Yeah, but maybe not on a 63-acre ranch!”

That’s partly why Selleck was so desperate to save Blue Bloods, which had been running since 2010. He said that same month that he was still hoping that CBS executives would “come to their senses.”

“We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast,” he told CBS News at the time. “We’re winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: we aren’t sliding off down a cliff. We’re doing good shows, and still holding our place.”

Selleck Enjoyed His Busy Filming Schedule

Back in January, Selleck said that he had “learned to love” his busy schedule filming the show.

“Sometimes the hours are a little harder because I’m older, but so what?” he told TV Insider. “I want to work as long as they’ll have me.”

At the time, another source claimed that Selleck was also looking forward to spending more time on his ranch with his wife.

“He wants to relax on his ranch, walk around his property, spend time with his wife and family, and travel a bit,” a source told Closer Magazine in January.

It appears that Selleck may sadly be taking this too far.

Getting old isn’t easy, and admitting that one can’t do some of the physical things that they did when they were younger is perhaps even harder. Here’s hoping that Selleck heeds the advice of his family and friends and starts taking it easy before he gets hurt!
