Tom Selleck of Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods fame has been working in Hollywood for decades, so he’s met countless celebrities. In a new interview, Selleck revealed that while he doesn’t often get starstruck, there’s one iconic celebrity that left him with that feeling, and he’s never forgotten her.
Selleck Reveals Who Made Him ‘Starstruck’
“I probably got a little starstruck with Mae West,” Selleck, 79, told Town and Country while promoting his new memoir You Never Know. “I didn’t get starstruck with [James] Garner, even though I just deeply respected his work, loved his work.”
Before becoming famous, Selleck had a brief scene with West in the 1970 movie Myra Breckinridge, which was his first film role. Check out that scene in the video below.
“Not too often,” Selleck added of the starstruck feeling. “The really good people — good actors — have a way of cutting through that pretty quick.”
Selleck went on to admit that he’s “gotten to meet a lot of people,” but whenever he feels even slightly starstruck, he gets over it very quickly.

Selleck’s ‘Accidental’ Hollywood Career
Selleck never expected to meet so many celebrities in his life, as he never set out to be an actor. He previously described his Hollywood career as being “accidental.”
“I’d never taken an acting class. I had no training, no desire,” Selleck told People Magazine last month. “People would say, ‘Oh, he was bitten by the acting bug’ or, ‘He wanted to be a star.’ I’ve never talked that way in my life. I just wanted to get a job and work.”
After various acting roles in 1970, Selleck got his big break in 1980, when he was cast in the title role of the hugely successful television show Magnum P.I. The series was still a major hit when it went off the air in 1988 after Selleck decided that he wanted to spend more time with his wife and daughter on their ranch in California.

Selleck’s Fight To Save Blue Bloods
Selleck’s Hollywood career continues to this day, as he has been starring on the CBS police drama Blue Bloods with stars Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan since 2010. Sadly, CBS has decided to cancel Blue Bloods, with the final eight episodes that are currently being filmed set to air in the fall.
This hasn’t sat well with Selleck, who has been desperately trying to get CBS to reconsider ending this program.
“My hope is CBS wakes up to the fact that we’re still winning the night on Friday night and performing on Paramount Plus,” Selleck recently said, according to Hello! Magazine.
“We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast,” he later added. “We’re winning the night. All the cast wants to come back.”
Selleck has long been one of the most down-to-earth stars in Hollywood, and he’s never let decades of fame go to his head. That’s why it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that he rarely gets starstruck, as he realizes that celebrities are normal people, just like you and me!
