It’s been two weeks since the television show Blue Bloods came to an end after being on for fourteen years. Though it was a hit with fans and critics alike ever since it premiered back in 2010, CBS still decided to cancel it. Even over the protestations of the star!

Abigail Hawk, 42, played Detective 1st Grade Abigail Baker on over 250 episodes of Blue Bloods. In a new interview, Hawk is opening up about the “master class in acting” that she got on this show. She particularly learned a lot from her 79 year-old co-star Tom Selleck, who played NYPD Police Commissioner Frank Reagan.

Hawk Learns From Selleck

“My favorite acting advice he gave me was to always have a secret,” Hawk told Closer Weekly. “I really love that because you can apply it universally. It makes your character interesting — and you don’t have to tell anybody the secret. The camera misses absolutely nothing, but when you have a secret, there is a little sparkle behind your eyes.”

Hawk became close friends with Selleck over the years that they starred on Blue Bloods as she learned from the veteran actor.

“He is inherently shy, very humble, and so authentic as both a person and an actor. He made us all better,” Hawk said of Selleck. “Some of my favorite conversations with him were when he talked about an issue, a social issue, a political issue, whatever.”

“He always took the most left-wing news source, and then a right-wing news source, and read them both, researched the entire spectrum, and then made his decision based on all of that information,” she continued. “Yes, of course, he has his opinions, but they come from being very well traveled and having seen a lot of stuff in his 79 years.”

Hawk Devastated By Blue Bloods Cancellation

Like Selleck and the rest of the Blue Bloods cast, Hawk has been left devastated by the show’s cancellation.

“No one wanted this show to end,” she admitted. “The most likely scenario, unfortunately, is that this is the end of the road for these specific characters in this time frame. [Although] some executives have said there is potential for a spinoff or an extension.”

Hawk had been acting on Blue Bloods ever since it premiered back in 2010.

“This show took up half of my adult life,” she admitted. “I was 20 years old when I started. During the show’s run, I became a parent. I bought a house, and then I bought a second home in Maine. Now, I have an almost 13-year-old kid. I look at him every day, and I’m like, ‘Damn, I was pregnant with you like two seconds ago on the show.’”

Hawk’s Final Blue Bloods Scene

Hawk couldn’t help but become emotional when filming her final scene as Det. Baker.

“I poured so much of myself into her,” Hawk said. “I hope to carry her into situations where I am unsure of myself and have her confidence as I keep moving forward. All you can do is put one foot in front of the other.”

“I just love that Baker was never afraid of her words and decisions,” she concluded of Baker. “She was fearless but respectful. She knew her value and worth, and I think, as women, that’s something we all struggle with. I will probably have impostor syndrome for the rest of my life!”

Blue Bloods was a show that celebrated both family values and law enforcement, making it a rarity in television these days. That’s why millions of fans will be missing Blue Bloods just as much as the cast is.

While we’re sad that Blue Bloods is over, we can certainly still smile that it happened. Here’s hoping that Hawk can find an exciting new project as soon as possible!
