The beloved police family drama Blue Bloods came to an end last Friday after fourteen years and 293 episodes. No one wanted to see the show end.

So much so that Donnie Wahlberg, Tom Selleck, and the rest of the cast spent much of the past year desperately trying to convince CBS to reconsider canceling the show, but their efforts ended up being in vain.

Wahlberg Opens Up About Blue Bloods Ending

In a new interview, Wahlberg is confirming that the show’s stars “did everything we could” to save Blue Bloods. He’s also revealing the emotional moment that happened after they finished filming the last Reagan family dinner scene.

“I think one thing that I think about from time to time is, when we finished filming the scene, the entire crew came into the Reagan house,” Wahlberg, 55, told Fox News. “And we’re all standing around. There’s a couple hundred people standing there. And it was quiet for a minute.”

“I think there was a long pause after they said ‘cut,’” he continued. “And I think we all stood there or sat there kind of hoping that either, A, someone would say, ‘Hey, it’s all just a joke. We’re going to keep filming more episodes.’ Or B, everyone was hesitant because we knew once somebody started talking, we’d all become emotional.”

Wahlberg’s Guilt

Wahlberg went on to open up about the guilt he felt over failing to save Blue Bloods.

“I think one of the things we haven’t really talked about is having worked so long with the crew that we had in New York City…I personally — and I’m sure some of the other castmates — felt bad. I felt sad,” he admitted. “Like, we tried to keep the show going. We tried to help the show carry on, and we couldn’t. We couldn’t do it. You know, we did everything we could, everything in our power, to have the show carry on.”

The Blue Bloods cast and crew have been working together since 2010. While Wahlberg is grateful for the loyal crew, he feels that the cast is “letting them down a little bit.”

“That was tough. That was tough to process, you know,” he lamented. “And I know the crew wouldn’t feel that way. But in some ways, we just kept sort of believing we would keep the show going. When that finale ended, it was kind of like reality hit us all. It was definitely a part of it, a bit of like, ‘Gosh, you know, if we could have just kept going a few more years, you know?’”

Wahlberg Praises The NYPD

Wahlberg concluded by expressing his love for “the people of New York and the NYPD,” saying that he hopes that Blue Bloods represented them well during the show’s run.

“It was a lot to say goodbye,” he stated. “It might sometimes, from the outside, seem weird, like, ‘Oh, all these actors are crying that their show’s over.’ But we did become a family, and we did become a family with the crew. And just to say goodbye to them was emotional.”

While it’s sad that Blue Bloods is ending, fourteen years is still an incredible run. Indeed, Wahlberg, his fellow cast members, and their crew should be incredibly proud of all that they’ve accomplished with this show.

Blue Bloods was one of the few modern television shows that celebrated both family values and law enforcement. Perhaps its cancellation wouldn’t be quite so devastating if there were other shows like it waiting to fill the massive void that it has left behind in the television landscape. While there can never be another Blue Bloods, heres hoping that we get more shows promoting similar values in the future!
