The series finale of the hit television show Blue Bloods is set to air tonight on CBS. The police family drama has been beloved by fans ever since it debuted back in 2010.
Ahead of the series finale, Tom Selleck is speaking out to complain about not having any say in how Blue Bloods comes to an end. He’s also revealing how he would have written the end of his character Frank Reagan’s story.
Selleck Had No Input In Blue Bloods Finale
“I thought about that,” Selleck, 79, told Entertainment Weekly. “I didn’t really have input in where the show was going for a final episode.”
Selleck went on to say that in his “alternate ending, the result on the audience would be that Frank Reagan remains a man alone, who never wanted the job he had, that has a hyperactive sense of responsibility, and I think he’d be commissioner till he drops.”
This came as somewhat of a surprise to fans. That’s because the Blue Bloods show-runner Kevin Wade has previously said that he never sees Frank retiring.
“I’m pretty sure that Frank would stay in his job until the series ended,” Wade told TV Insider back in May. “We didn’t really pursue that avenue because the show is built on him being the police commissioner of New York City.”
“So to take a detour during the last mile, if this is the last mile, I don’t know what he would be doing down at the hardware store or having coffee with old buddies during the day,” he added. “I always have to look at stuff that generates stories. Police Commissioner of New York generates stories. He’s the CEO of 35,000 cops.”
#BlueBloodsFinale is trending in The US because fans of the police procedural drama series have expressed nostalgia and fondness for the final episode which airs tonight.
Blue Bloods comes to an end after 14 years on television with a total of 292 episodes.

Donnie Wahlberg Weighs In
The Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg is also revealing what his ideal alternate ending would be. Of course, Wahlberg wishes that Blue Bloods wasn’t ending at all.
“I would have Danny Reagan walk right into the next episode of Blue Bloods and we do another 14 seasons,” said Wahlberg, 55. “So there’s that.”
“Now that that’s out of the way, I would say I would have Danny Reagan walk right into his next chapter of his life, maybe in a different place doing a similar job and perhaps with someone from the current cast,” he continued. “But I want him to not be too far from the family so that he could still see them and spend time with them, but maybe to see what life has in store for him now that his boys have gone off and he’s empty nesting and his wife’s gone.”
“Maybe he can see what the future holds for him on his own,” Wahlberg added. “As long as he can visit the family sometimes. Does that sound like a tease for a spinoff?”
It does! Is that a hint?
Happy #BlueBloodsFinale Friday! That’s the hashtag. I’ll see you tonight – as usual. Let’s have some fun, until Danny Reagan’s tour is done! 💙❤️

Wahlberg Hoping For Blue Bloods Spinoff
Indeed, Wahlberg is hopeful that a Blue Bloods spinoff will actually come to fruition.
“It feels like, I read a movie script, I’m negotiating to do a deal for the movie, and I’m walking to my agent’s office, and I keep looking back over my shoulder, hoping someone from Blue Bloods is chasing me down the street saying, ‘Wait, we’re going to do one more season,’” Wahlberg told Variety.
“A lot of times in television, 14 years in, people are running for the exit,” he explained. “We’re all trying to move forward now onto what’s next, but I think every one of us has that feeling of just turning back, hoping someone’s there to say, ‘Don’t sign that contract. Wait a minute!’”
Lets go! #BlueBloods ❤️💙 https://t.co/mcFB0CBeRG

Selleck Is ‘Frustrated’ That Blue Bloods Is Ending
As for Selleck, he’s admitted to being “frustrated” by CBS cancelling Blue Bloods.
“I’m kind of frustrated,” he told TV Insider in October. “During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful. In a Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024 (in total viewers, we were No. 9 out of 100), if you discount the three football shows, we’re No. 6!”
“My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go,” Selleck continued. “So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out. I remember after the weekend [of the final episode’s shoot], I said, ‘I’ve got to get to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday.’ Well, there was no Monday. It’s just going to take a while.”
